The
Sandpiper Probably the coolest place around Baltimore, even around Maryland, to see some good bluegrass is this little place in Dundalk called the Sandpiper. There is no cover charge but the beers and drinks are $2.50 (no draft beer). It's worth it. It's all regulars in there so you might get some funny looks from the locals but everyone is nice and really there for the music. There is music only on the weekends as far as I can tell. I'm not sure when the music starts but it's probably around 9:30 and they play up to 1:30 am. The Sandpiper Off of North Point Boulevard (Behind Memories) Directions: WARNING: The Sandpiper is very difficult to find. Plan to get lost at least once on your way there. Take these directions with you and if you have trouble, pull over to the High's, 7-11, or gas station along North Point Boulvard and talk to some locals, show them the directions, they'll help you out - that's how I first found this place. From Baltimore: The fastest way out of the city is to take Charles Street uptown or Saint Paul Place downtown and then take Orleans Street out. In order to get to Orleans Street, you will have to be on Charles Street or upper Saint Paul Place. NOTE: Saint Paul Street and Calvert Street do not intersect with Orleans Street. From Charles, turn right on Mulberry Street (this becomes Orleans Street after 1 block). If you are heading southbound on Saint Paul Street, stay to the right hand side after Centre Street and take upper Saint Paul Place to Mulberry/Orleans and turn left. You are now heading east on Orleans Street After approximately 2 miles, Orleans Street becomes Pulaski Highway and you will continue on Pulaski Highway to Erdman Ave. At Erdman Ave, turn right. Erdman Ave becomes North Point Boulevard. NOTE: You can also take Eastern Avenue out to North Point Boulevard (they intersect at the East point Mall) or the harbor tunnels to North Point Boulevard (from South Baltimore). Travel on North Point Boulevard east/north for about 2 miles until you see a strip club called Memories and a restaurant called Costas Inn on the left. This is New Battle Grove road or something similar NOTE: There are about 5 roads in the immediate area with the words Battle Grove in the title - so be careful. The important point here is to take the battle Grove road that goes behind Memories. You are now in a trucking/shipping industrial park with no street names or real streets. You will probably get lost in here a bit. NOTE: these directions are far from perfect, as a matter of fact they could be pretty misleading - but as long as you've gotten back into this weird little trucking Mecca your in the right place and if worse comes to worse you can drive around back in here until you find it. Now, here's where it gets fun. Turn onto that street behind Memories and it will bend around a bit. Go slowly so that you can see a small bridge to your right. Go over the bridge and across the train tracks then make a left. When you see shipping containers stacked up to your right, look for a road to make a right turn onto and take it. Follow this road down to the Key Yacht Club - or something Yacht Club. At the yacht club turn left and go about 50 yards to the Sandpiper. There will be about 35 pick-up trucks and about 10 big trucks in the Sandpiper parking lot. You're there.
